The following is an example of extinct Pleistocene megafauna (a camel ) which has been  anciently modified by man.  Andrew Hemmings has done research from which he has concluded that native Americans worked only fresh bone, which means that this object was worked by paleoindians at least ten thousand years ago.  Examples of this type of interaction between paleo man and Pleistocene animals are extremely rare. During my 33 years of collecting in Florida, I have handled thousands of stone points and tools, but only a very few artifacts of this type, probably less than three dozen.

Modified Camel Leg  Dixie Co,. FL, probably Paleo
5 1/2"  $300 order a4510
COMMENTS:    fossil camel leg, split, distal portion cut at 90 degree angle and smoothed., plus another notch is apparent on distal end (see first photo).   .  Purpose is unknown.

Horse Tibia with cut marks  Pleistocene  Taylor Co. FL wpe1.jpg (1118 bytes)
13 1/2" long  $300  order f683
COMMENTS:  these appear to be butcher marks, and indeed are located in the precise area where the tendons would be severed in order to separate the joints.  Another rare example of Paleoindian interacting with Pleistocene megafauna.

Modified Mammoth/Mastodon patella   early Holocene  Taylor Co. FL wpe1.jpg (1118 bytes)
appx 5" by 7"  $500 order a4512
COMMENTS:    Seven distinct cut marks made by early man.  Cases of paleofauna exhibiting interaction with early humans are extremely rare and very seldom available for purchase

Modified Mammoth/Mastodon femur or humerus   early Holocene  Taylor Co. FL wpe1.jpg (1118 bytes)
appx 5 1/2" by 3"  $500 order a4513
COMMENTS:  two deep grooves, cannot be carnivore nor naturally made.   These are not butcher marks, rather intentional grooves made by early man.  Cases of paleofauna exhibiting interaction with early humans are extremely rare and very seldom available for purchase.

BISON SCAPULA WITH CUT MARKS  Taylor Co. FL  $100 order a4483
COMMENTS:  rear side has flaked, now stabilized with Butvar.

Harpoon  age unknown, prehistoric  Bering Sea, Aleutians, Alaska
4 1/4"  $250 order a4493
COMMENTS:    typical of Alaskan harpoons, it is made from a small curved rib, and has lines scored the length of the rib at the base of the barbs.  Five perfect barbs, thinned at the rear for insertion or attachment to a shaft.  Well preserved and flawless.

Burnishing/polishing bone tool  Taylor Co. FL
4"  $50 order a4497
COMMENTS:  shows a great deal of use on several surfaces.

Dimple Stone/Bola Ball  Transitional- onward  Gilchrist Co. FL
1 5/8" tall  $50 order a4489
COMMENTS:  stone is somewhat eroded and the dimple a little flat, but definitely a bola stone.

Worked Antler  Citrus Co. FL
$10 order a4321
COMMENTS:  I think this is a broken antler handle used for a pin or a stone knife.  The antler has been ground down heavily on two sides to make a flat handle.

Antler Handle  Citrus Co. FL
3 3/4"  $50 order a4315
COMMENTS:  long straight cut one side, inside gouged out to hold stem of stone knife.

Peg Scraper Archaic  Hernando Co. FL
1 7/8"  $110 order a4290
COMMENTS:  really beautiful coral, well made, from Blackwater Pond,, 1991, land of pegs.

Green bone is very hard and suitable for many tasks:  spear shaft tips, leather punches, hair pins, fish gigs with barbs attached, separating tendons and joints from large game, etc.  Universal throughout many epochs from Paleo to Contact, with age they become very brittle and it is rare to get complete ones with any length.

Bone Pin  Citrus Co. FL  6 7/16"  $75 order a3014 no repair

Bone Pin  Citrus Co. FL  7 1/2"  $145 order a4485 no repair
