The following awls are all from Citrus and Levy Counties,: FL and are made from quartered deer canon bones. Green bone is very hard and suitable for many tasks: spear shaft tips, leather punches, hair pins, fish gigs with barbs attached, separating tendons and joints from large game, etc. Universal throughout many epochs from Paleo to Contact, with age they become very brittle and it is rare to get complete ones with any length. The largest below measures over eight inches, almost unheard of, and other are over seven.

Hair Pin
7 3/8" $300 order a2679
COMMENTS: long, slender, very delicate, curved hair pin, no flaws, a
miracle it is not broken. This is one of the finest pins I have had.
Pins of this length and quality are rarely available.

BONE DAGGER
time period uncertain. Lake Co. FL
$975 order a2109 REDUCED!
$650
COMMENTS: this piece has been broken or cracked and professionally
repaired, but glued only and absolutely no restoration. It is so well done
that you have to look very carefully to see the crack. Beautiful
condition, not stained dark like to many daggers, this one was lying in sugar
white sand. It has the added very unusual feature of a tiny hole drilled
by the maker. This artifact was carefully examined by Claude Van Order,
recognized as the foremost expert on aboriginal Florida tool making, and he
concluded that the tiny hole was drilled by the Indian. He also stated
that he had never seen another bone dagger with a similar tiny drilled hole.
*Note
of special interest: this dagger appears on pages 106 and
290 of Schroder's 2006 revised edition of The Anthropology of Florida
Points and Blades.

ENGRAVED HAIR PIN HOLDdm
time period uncertain Gilchrist Co. FL
$75 REDUCED!
$50 order a1911
COMMENTS: lines go all around like a barber pole. Space between last
two lines crosshatched both sides.
